Spotlighting Our New Professionals

Amanda Dawson
Event Specialist at the University of North Florida
Twitter: @amdawson23

PRSA member since: 2015. University of North Florida PRSSA member starting in 2012.

Why did you join PRSA and how does membership benefit you?
I initially joined UNF PRSSA while in college to attend the events and workshops. I stayed affiliated and became a member of PRSA because of the incredible networking opportunities. I have gained numerous mentors and received invaluable career advice from my PRSA membership.

Why/how did you chose a career in public relations?
Growing up, I wanted to be a journalist and always dreamed of being involved in the media. While most kids idolized movie stars or action figures, my childhood heroes were Helen Thomas and Anderson Cooper. In college, I realized that I could use my media interests in ways beyond simply reporting on events and happenings. Practicing public relations gives me the ability to craft moving stories, events and media for clients, helping them to express their passion and ultimately gain success. I love helping people find their voice, it’s my dream job.

What are you most looking forward to in your career?
Currently, I am most looking forward to landing a full-time position at the University of North Florida. In my current position, I have gained important experience in various aspects of public relations work. I work with a talented team of professionals and look forward to growing in my career with this esteemed organization. Eventually I would also like to work with non-profits that assist underprivileged youth.

What’s your favorite part of working in public relations?
My favorite part about public relations is that every day is different. The field is so broad and encompasses many aspects of communication, marketing and story-telling. There are always new challenges to meet with creative, fun solutions.
